This year one of the admissions essays for BIMA centered around inspiration. We asked applicants to tell us what inspires them, why it inspires them and what it inspires them to do.
This essay topic sparked a lot of conversation among staff at the office. Everyone seems to have a unique and interesting answer. Because of these wonderful impromptu conversations, we decided to pose this question to a wider audience.
We want to know… What inspires you? Why does this specific thing inspire you? What has it inspired you to do?

What inspires me? I get super-excited when there’s dozens of people running around working on some giant crazy project– like the first year of Ani Maamin at Genesis 2010. So many people pouring their heart and soul (and sweat and tears!) into one unified goal…
I get inspired by people who are passionate about what they do and what they believe in. They could be young or old, accomplished or novice, and their ideas could be new and exciting or old and crusty, but if they show true passion, it can be inspirational.
I am inspired by a vision of what the world might become in a better future. That vision keeps me working as a Jewish communal professional, in the belief that what we do as a community and as individuals, makes a difference. Our work inspires others and other communities, to join in making a difference.
I am inspired by learning and by being around other people who love to learn. Sometimes I think that adulthood brings with it the expectation that a person should pretend he or she knows more than everyone else in a context, but when I listen to others (young, old, and in between) I’m most inspired by what I begin to understand about their experiences and their paradigms.
